Gum Disease Impacts Your Heart Health

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not."

The Procedure for Laser Dentistry in Hewlett, NY

If you are looking for a specialist for laser dentistry in Nassau County and Manhattan, NY, set up a consultation with Dr. Marc Levine. Gum disease that is left untreated can advance to periodontitis which can destroy connective tissues and the bone structure that support the teeth. If your teeth become loose or start to shift, this can affect your bite and trigger a number of oral health problems. You need to seek gum disease treatment as soon as you detect any of the signs of periodontal disease.

Dr. Levine performs the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) to help save loose teeth and promote healthy bone regeneration around the tooth structure.

How the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure Works

Here is a closer look at what you can expect during your gum disease treatment with Dr. Levine:

1. Periodontal Pocket Measurements. Dr. Levine will use a small ruler to measure the depths of the periodontal pockets. This will determine how much gum to tooth attachment loss has occurred.

2. Bacteria Removal. Dr. Levine will pass the PerioLase® MVP-7™ over the gums to destroy infected tissue and remove bacteria beneath the gum line. This type of laser light is not absorbed in water so the healthy tissue is left behind. Most patients experience minimal discomfort or pain during this process.

3. Eradication of Calculus Deposits. Next, Dr. Levine will apply an ultrasonic scaler to the root surfaces of the teeth. This helps to remove any tartar, or calculus, deposits that have formed under the gum line.

4. Blood Clotting. Dr. Levine will pass the laser over the tissue again to eradicate any remaining bacteria and also to trigger the body’s clotting process. The blood creates a sticky seal around the periodontal pocket and naturally creates a sanitary environment to start the healing process.

5. Tissue Compression. The tissue is recompressed against the surface of the tooth so that no stitches are necessary.

6. Bite Adjustment. Dr. Levine may need to adjust the bite to ensure that the teeth are not being damaged when you bite down. He will also make sure to pay close attention to your teeth that have signs of bone loss.
