Dr. Marc Levine may recommend osseous surgery, or flap surgery, as part of your treatment plan if any periodontal pockets around your teeth have not responded to other types of treatment or therapies. Dr. Levine offers osseous surgery in Nassau County and Manhattan, NY for patients that may need a reduction or elimination of periodontal pockets. Flap surgery is often recommended after other treatments have failed and is performed when the pocket depths have become worse or have not improved over time.
How Flap Surgery is Performed
Before the procedure is performed, Dr. Levine will take the time to numb the area using local anesthesia. A small incision is made in the gum tissue and the gum is lifted away from the tooth and underlying bone to ensure that there is direct access to the area being treated. Next, the surface of the tooth must be cleaned thoroughly and any plaque or tartar buildup is removed. If the bone has become uneven or rough because of the destruction caused by bacteria, the surface of the bone is smoothed out. Dr. Levine may recommend a bone grafting procedure if there are any bony defects or spaces in the bone that need to be filled.
After the tooth root has been cleaned and the bone tissue has been smoothed out, the gum tissue is trimmed down to match the underlying structure. Dr. Levine may then place stitches in the area to hold the gum tissue in position so that it can heal properly.
After the Flap Surgery Procedure
Dr. Levine may prescribe pain medication after the procedure. The stitches may need to be removed within six to ten days unless he has used dissolvable stitches. You will return to the office about a month after surgery so that we can make sure you are healing properly. Some patients may notice that the teeth appear longer in the mouth because of the gum tissue that is removed with flap surgery. Some also experience increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, but this can often be managed with sensitivity toothpaste.
